Chapter 8
âI suspect someoneâs been on the phone,â he shook his head. âIâm sorry.â
âDo they always watch your dates?â I asked, before eating another bite of the most delicious burger Iâve ever tasted.
âI donât date,â Kadenâs eyes met mine. âHavenât in years.â
Green flag!
Swallowing, I then asked, âwhy? Arenât there any local ladies youâre interested in?â I shoved a fry into my mouth for no reason other than to avoid looking at him.
âNone of them are my mate.â
Aww, hell, thatâs it, folks! Green flags are pouring from the sky, covering the field. Gameâs over, we have a winner!
I donât think so.
Here, sensibility, have a green flag.
âYou stopped dating?â I whispered.
âYes, I know, I have one mate. I donât want to hurt anyoneâs feelings because when I found my mate, I knew I would break up with them.â He smiled that damn cute little smile of his. âSo, I stopped dating over ten years ago.â
I sat in silence, gazing at him while my mind replayed what he said. He didnât want to hurt anyone, thatâs amazing. Ten years ago, as good-looking as he is, thatâs incredible.
âI donât date either.â I stopped deciding how much to tell him, deciding honesty was the best policy. âI was hurt once, and I decided not to allow myself to be hurt again.â I swore for an instant that his eyes flashed a darker color, but when I focused on them, they were the same.
âIâm sorry someone hurt you,â Kaden spoke in a soft voice. âI would never hurt you.â
I sat in my chair, not knowing what to say. I honestly believed he wasnât the type to hurt someone. But weâre not a couple. I mean, I guess if I lived here then sure, maybe. The minute I heard his voice, I knew who had walked into the bar and my stomach sank. I raised my eyes to Kaden's when I heard a low rumble come from his side of the table.
âWhat the hell are all you low lifeâs doinâ? Why the hell are all of you sitting on this side of the bar?â
I didnât look, I just watched as Kadenâs eyes followed Boss. This time, I saw his eyes flash. Instantly, Iâm back sitting at the table with Lady Jâs and Carla. He is paranormal, yes, but due to client confidentiality, Iâm not allowed to explain more. Thatâs up to him. But, she raised her hand. I can, however, say heâs not a ghost.
I canât believe I havenât asked him yet. Heâs paranormal, magical, a magical being. How could I have forgotten? I guess I was caught up in, well, him. I just didnât think. I watched him for some sort of sign, something that would give me a clue about what he was.
Kadenâs eyes remained fixed as I heard Boss discover we were who the people at the bar were watching.
âNow, what have we here? Sexy thing. All you had to say was you were hungry; I would have,â He licked his lips. âfilled you up.
