Chapter 8

“I suspect someone’s been on the phone,” he shook his head. “I’m sorry.”

“Do they always watch your dates?” I asked, before eating another bite of the most delicious burger I’ve ever tasted.

“I don’t date,” Kaden’s eyes met mine. “Haven’t in years.”

Green flag!

Swallowing, I then asked, “why? Aren’t there any local ladies you’re interested in?” I shoved a fry into my mouth for no reason other than to avoid looking at him.

“None of them are my mate.”

Aww, hell, that’s it, folks! Green flags are pouring from the sky, covering the field. Game’s over, we have a winner!

I don’t think so.

Here, sensibility, have a green flag.

“You stopped dating?” I whispered.

“Yes, I know, I have one mate. I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings because when I found my mate, I knew I would break up with them.” He smiled that damn cute little smile of his. “So, I stopped dating over ten years ago.”

I sat in silence, gazing at him while my mind replayed what he said. He didn’t want to hurt anyone, that’s amazing. Ten years ago, as good-looking as he is, that’s incredible.

“I don’t date either.” I stopped deciding how much to tell him, deciding honesty was the best policy. “I was hurt once, and I decided not to allow myself to be hurt again.” I swore for an instant that his eyes flashed a darker color, but when I focused on them, they were the same.

“I’m sorry someone hurt you,” Kaden spoke in a soft voice. “I would never hurt you.”

I sat in my chair, not knowing what to say. I honestly believed he wasn’t the type to hurt someone. But we’re not a couple. I mean, I guess if I lived here then sure, maybe. The minute I heard his voice, I knew who had walked into the bar and my stomach sank. I raised my eyes to Kaden's when I heard a low rumble come from his side of the table.

“What the hell are all you low life’s doin’? Why the hell are all of you sitting on this side of the bar?”

I didn’t look, I just watched as Kaden’s eyes followed Boss. This time, I saw his eyes flash. Instantly, I’m back sitting at the table with Lady J’s and Carla. He is paranormal, yes, but due to client confidentiality, I’m not allowed to explain more. That’s up to him. But, she raised her hand. I can, however, say he’s not a ghost.

I can’t believe I haven’t asked him yet. He’s paranormal, magical, a magical being. How could I have forgotten? I guess I was caught up in, well, him. I just didn’t think. I watched him for some sort of sign, something that would give me a clue about what he was.

Kaden’s eyes remained fixed as I heard Boss discover we were who the people at the bar were watching.

“Now, what have we here? Sexy thing. All you had to say was you were hungry; I would have,” He licked his lips. “filled you up.
